Female founders and untapped potential are turning Africa into an exciting economic frontier

Africa, the second-largest and second-most populated continent on earth (after Asia), covers more than 30.3 million square kilometers, about twenty percent of the earth's land. It commands a GDP of roughly $3.1 trillion, led by economic powerhouses like South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, and Morocco, all with individual GDP figures well above $100 billion per year. We have historically looked to the West as the sole answer, but we are entering a trailblazing era of massive transformation: one where we must not let wars and chaos blind us to true progress.

Approximately 24% to 26% of women are actively starting and running businesses, the highest percentage globally, primarily across retail, food, textiles, catering, agriculture, artisanal products, and IT spaces. While specialized business growth funds exist, venture capital funding has lagged due to systemic biases that direct more investment toward men than women.

The strategy and approach while investing in Africa are similar to those recommended for any emerging market with growth potential. What I'm watching unfold in Africa right now mirrors what I saw in India back in 2003 as its market doors swung open. I remember giving a speech in the U.S. with Nancy Pelosi sitting as the chief guest, and I stood up there predicting India’s meteoric rise and its expanding middle class. I said the exact same thing about China. And on that exact same day, I called Africa what it is: the silent, sleeping giant that women would ultimately lead. Roughly 23 years later, look at where we are: Africa is moving forward aggressively.

Overcoming Misconceptions

You don’t see Africa’s growth because mainstream media prefers to paint Africa as a perpetual war zone or a place crippled by tribal conflicts. They choose not to look closer. But look at what actually comes out of the continent: massive commercial output, gorgeous beauty products, incredible commodities, fine wine, and textiles; all of it driven largely by women who are building these businesses as first-generation startup founders.

Female Resilience

Women are inherently resilient. Regardless of where they are born or the disadvantages stacked against them, they consistently find a way to thrive. Blessed with the gifts of multitasking and out-of-the-box thinking, they have overcome generations of suppression. They have stood up, pushed forward, and fought for systemic, economic, and social equality against patriarchal structures and gender discrimination.

We chose to focus this issue on Africa because people need to see its real beauty, the booming women-led enterprises, and the unstoppable trajectory happening right now and over the next decade. What I know is true: While plenty of people shift countries hunting for an easier life elsewhere, those who stay behind to build their home nations deserve to be revered, supported, and celebrated. Africa holds immense scope and untapped promise. Over the next twenty years, it is going to replicate the unbelievable success of India and China, and women will lead the way.
